Receiver software updates

We're always looking for ways to improve your TV experience. One way we can do that is to upgrade the software that operates your Shaw Direct receiver. That's the box that connects with your TV and relays information from the satellite so you can enjoy your programming.

We do this automatically. Think of it like computer software. The upgrades can be used to deliver new services and functionality to your Interactive Program Guide, which you will notice, or make other improvements to how signals are transmitted, which you won't notice.

When the satellite is downloading, you will be unable to access the Guide, or any video on your screen. Because we do it late at night, it should not impact your TV viewing. Generally, the process takes about 15 to 20 minutes. Often, a download timer will appear on your screen so you know what is happening. If you have an HDTV connected with an HDMI to DVI cable, your TV screen will be black during the download. The countdown will appear on the display panel on the front of your receiver.

Once the download is complete, your receiver will reset automatically. If the download timer appears on your screen for longer than 90 minutes, please call Shaw Direct Technical Support at 1.866.782.7932.

To help you understand these updates, we've answered the follow Frequently Asked Questions;

  1. How do I know if I have the latest software on my receiver?
  2. Can I keep the current version software I have now?
  3. How do I know when an upgrade is planned?

1. How do I know if I have the latest software on my receiver?

To see if your receiver has the new code press OPTIONS on your Shaw Direct remote control then choose: 6 - System Setup, 4 - System Setting, and then 7 - System Status (Options 6-4-7). On line "H" you will see the heading Current Version.

While receiver models may vary, the current version on most receivers should display a current software version of F8. This was updated in mid-May, 2009.

2. Can I keep the current version software I have now?

Software updates are automatic and mandatory. The upgrades not only give you access to the latest features, they also can be used to prepare the receivers for new signal technology and other improvements to how we deliver your TV programming. If all receivers weren't upgraded regularly, we can't do what we do best – deliver the value-packed programming options to your TV.

3. How do I know when an upgrade is planned?

Shaw Direct tries to ensure our customers are aware of changes to their receiver technology, especially when it impacts features like the onscreen Guide. You can always find details on upgrades on the Tech News section of the website. At times, we'll also use Receiver Mail or inserts in your monthly Shaw Direct bill to tell you when you can expect upgrades.
